The Marked was Billy's first band, he was eighteen years old and had just recently graduated from Glenbard North High School. Billy moved to Florida with his band named the Marked. The band was called appropriately after the birthmarks sported by the drummer and himself. Billy was born with a large strawberry birthmark on one hand and he was convinced that when anyone looked at him, they always looked at his hand first.

The band made very little progress. The music was a goth-metal style, used the same kind of idea of the Smashing Pumpkins of loud music and soft music and trying to put it all together but the band wasn't that really good and Billy's singing wasn't the greatest. The Marked played around 1986, they eventually returned to Chicago about twenty gigs later, and broke up.
