Billy Corgan Goes Hippie with Dave Navarro, Electric Prunes and Strawberry Alarm Clock

From Chartattack.com:

Billy Corgan Goes Hippie

billycorgan_hippieBilly Corgan is no longer a rat in an alt.rock cage and has become a hippie.

We’re kidding… or are we?

Corgan hasn’t started wearing Birkenstocks, grown his hair out or donned a fringed leather vest. But the setlist for a two-set show by Spirits In The Sky at Santa Barbara, Calif.’s Muddy Waters Coffee House on Friday was reportedly a summer of love-inspired affair.

The show obviously featured numbers by Saxon’s band The Seeds, a Bonnie Dobson number made popular by The Grateful Dead and covers of Pink Floyd and The Velvet Underground, according to the Santa Barbara Independent. The band also played 10 new tracks written by Corgan, which were apparently ’60s-influenced.

Spirits In The Sky is Corgan’s Sky Saxon tribute band featuring himself, guitarist Dave Navarro, Strawberry Alarm Clock keyboardist Mark Weitz and new Smashing Pumpkins drummer Mike Byrne. He formed the band after Saxon passed away earlier this summer, and they’re playing a run of six California shows this month.

Here’s the band’s setlist, according to the Santa Barbara Independent:

“Can’t Seem To Make You Mine” (The Seeds)
“Circular Change”
“Emerald Green Is The Colour”
“Widow Wake My Mind”
“West Coast”
“Freak”
“(Walk Me Out In The) Morning Dew” (Bonnie Dobson/Grateful Dead)
“The Fellowship”
“The Time Has Come” (Anne Briggs)
“A Stitch In Time” (Corgan acoustic)
“Caroline, Yes” (Corgan acostic)
“A Song For A Son” (Corgan acoustic)
“The Trip”
“Astral Planes”
“Femme Fatale” (The Velvet Underground)
“Lucifer Sam” (Pink Floyd)
“Long Haired Lady” (Quicksilver Messenger Service)

Smashing Pumpkins play Guitar Hero World Tour event

Ξ October 27th, 2008 by Andrew Pakula | → 0 Comments | ∇ Billy Corgan, Concerts, Music News, Smashing Pumpkins |

From the L.A. Times:

Smashing Pumpkins play Guitar Hero World Tour event, debut new song

Billy Corgan - Guitar Hero eventMemo to Activsion: Next time you have a launch party for the newest version of Guitar Hero, book the happy-go-lucky Foo Fighters (oh yes, they too are available for video game launch parties, for the right price, that is). The Smashing Pumpkins aren’t in any mood to send blue-eyed, blond-haired marketing minions home humming “Today.”

Billy Corgan’s message Saturday night to partygoers at a private Guitar Hero World Tour launch party? He is no corporate shill. Sure, the Smashing Pumpkins ringleader cashed the $100,000+ check his band surely received for performing at the bash, which was co-sponsored by Best Buy and took place just blocks away from the Minneapolis-based big box retailer’s La Brea Avenue store in a massive sound studio — but that doesn’t mean he played nicely.

Things started out promisingly enough as Corgan took the stage around 10 p.m. The band tore through “Tarantula” with efficiency and grace before performing a perfunctory version of “G.L.O.W.” (which is featured in Guitar Hero World Tour as a single, the first time a band has recorded a new song exclusively for the franchise). But the second half of the set left the curious crowd, heavy on Best Buy execs and contest-winners, feeling confused, used or worse.

(Full set list plus more of the review after the jump)

“Old School…1979!” one man a decade or so removed from the frathouse yelled out, perhaps unaware that the band had just offered up a blistering rendition of “Siva,” from Smashing Pumpkins’ debut “Gish.”

With that kind of crowd staring back at the frontman, you can hardly blame Corgan for saving the entire second half of the set for working out new material, and dark, experimental feedback-laden noodling. Was this the 41-year-old’s way of rebelling against “fake” guitar heroes playing the video game on one of the multiple screens set up just steps away from the stage?

“I feel like Sarah Palin up here,” he deadpanned at one point during the set, perhaps referencing his comfort level at being the evening’s cheerleader. Although Corgan seemed in good enough spirits (wearing a silver skirt and a tight, black shirt with a spider on it…the same exact outfit he wore to the Scream Awards earlier this month: See picture above), it was clear he wasn’t in the mood to play the hits.

Those of you that may have seen either the press release or any info out there about the tour may find yourself scratching your head a bit about the shows format. We tried to keep it simple but as is our custom, its just not always that simple!! SO I thought I would post up some additional info to make sure that there was absolute clarity about what shows would be going on where-when.

First off, the 2 night format is about playing the most songs over 2 nights that would hopefully create very distinct shows from one another. No song will be repeated means exactly as it sounds, if you go to show #1 of a 2 night stand (black sunshine!), you wouldn’t hear anything on night # 2 (white crosses) that you heard song-wise on the first night. The cities where we are playing only 1 show will feature an amalgamated show that will most likely have some songs we won’t be playing in the 2 night format shows, but take from both the sunshine and the crosses show. Get it? I hope so…cause its a lot for us to digest as well.

Below is a list of shows, where I’ll highlight just for overkill what show will be taking place:

Sunshine, Cross, or SS (special show for the one offs)

Smashing Pumpkins to play shows titled “Black Sunshine,” & “White Crosses.” & perform on the Jimmy Kimmel Live

According to Blabbermouth.net

“..The PUMPKINS are coming prepared with completely different set lists in each of the multi-night engagements with no songs being repeated over the course of the two night run. Night #1 is being called “Black Sunshine,” while night #2 will be dubbed “White Crosses.” A special two-night ticket bundle will be available for all multi-night engagements.

In Chicago — where singer/guitarist Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin continue to be based — the PUMPKINS will play four shows at two different venues. In cities where the band is set to play one night, they plan to deliver a unique one-off set….

…The PUMPKINS have also confirmed a national television appearance for Friday, October 24 when they’ll perform “G.L.O.W.” on the outdoor stage at ABC-TV’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” ”
