Vote for the Pumpkins!

An online chart for the greatest albums of all time is at www.dotmusic.com/premier. Go there to vote for your favorite Smashing Pumpkins albums. You'll have to "write" them in, because no Pumpkins have appeared on the Top 50 since it started seven weeks ago! We can do much better than that. Let's show our support by voting for our favorite band. (And hey, if you have more than one e-mail address, use 'em all!) Hey, it may be obsessive, but hey... The Spice Girls are number NINE right now. ::shudder::

Allstarmag's Pumpkins Interview, Part 3

The following is part 3 of a 3-part interview from allstarmag.com:
Billy Corgan Explains the Meaning of 'Adore'

The Smashing Pumpkins' Adore album title is not some light- hearted or tongue- in- cheek reference to the band's public standing. The thought behind the moniker goes much deeper than just hearts, flowers, and fans. "I was just looking for something that seemed to symbolize the intensity of love in all its positive and negative aspects," says Billy Corgan. "The concept of adoration is like the word 'fanatical': there's a positive energy and there's a negative energy in adoration, and in looking at love there's a good side and a bad side.

"I was trying to look at it from all ends," Corgan continues. "What makes a person want to kill for their country, what makes a person want to kill the person they love, what makes a person want to drive across the country to see someone for five minutes? That kind of intensity seemed to sum up the whole thing for me." When the Pumpkins played two shows in Australia recently -- in Sydney and Melbourne -- those conceptual notions were supported musically by the physical presence of not one but two percussionists, a keyboard player, and Corgan's own sinewy lead work. But rather than filling in the breathing spaces in the musical landscape, the additional personnel somehow opened everything up and underlined the possibility that Adore is more of a blues or folk album, albeit with certain Corgan- prescribed preconditions.

"I spent a lot of time listening to old folk music and old blues," he says. "When I tell people they just don't believe me, because they can't necessarily hear it in the music. But I really went back and tried to pinpoint in myself what's the true source of music of the soul. That was my foundation. "But at the same time," he adds, "I didn't want to make this kind of folk album that harkened back to the old days. I guess I'm trying to make a folk album for the future, a folk album that seems to suit our times. As much as Bob Dylan's 'Blowing in the Wind' was very 1964, maybe 'To Sheila' or 'Ava Adore' or one of those songs is very 1998.

"It's like facing a technophobia, and the distance between human beings and machines. There's a relevance in there, just as much as the folk singers who sang about [fear] of losing their jobs because now there was machines that work. It's that same kind urgency, energy, and fear. It all seemed to mix in for me."

More evidence of a possible "Perfect" single

An e-mail from Josh Heibel has brought to my attention that E.Q.S. Music is taking pre-orders for a U.K. "Perfect" single by The Smashing Pumpkins. Check it out for yourself by clicking here. This would seem to indicate that either "Perfect" is the next single from 'Adore', or E.Q.S. Music is accepting pre-orders for something that doesn't exist. We'll keep you posted on any single developments, and thanks to Josh for bringing this to our attention!

Sunday, June 28th

Is "Perfect" the next single?

We've been receiving several e-mails suggesting that "Perfect" may be the next single from 'Adore.' Some of you have been hearing "Perfect" on the radio lately, either on radio programs that play brand new singles before they are released, or on radio stations that haven't been playing "non-single" 'Adore' tracks. In particular, an e-mail sent to Netphoria revealed that WRCX in Chicago played "Perfect", and according to the source, that station hasn't been playing any tracks besides "Ava Adore".

Does this mean that "Perfect" will be the next CD single? Not necessarily. "Perfect" may just be getting radio airplay as a radio-only single, like "Muzzle" from 'MCIS'. But, keep your eyes and ears open just in case plans for a CD single of "Perfect" are made. As always, Netphoria will post confirmation as soon as it becomes available to us.

Allstarmag's Pumpkins Interview, Part 1

The following is part 1 of a 3-part interview from allstarmag.com:
Billy Corgan Discusses the Quintessential Pumpkins Album

Billy Corgan doesn't need to consult his business manager on a regular basis or gaze at walls full of platinum awards to be reminded he's made his mark in popular culture. He just has to answer the phone. An invitation to induct Pink Floyd into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland is not the sort of opportunity that presents itself to just anybody every day. After all, Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon is one of the biggest- selling albums of all time. But the honored Corgan was anything but tongue- tied by the significance of the moment when he took the podium.

"I spent half my speech chastising the music business for being lame," he says. "Pink Floyd, which never really had hit songs, somehow managed to make one of the biggest- selling records of all time. Go figure." The Pumpkins themselves are no strangers to the process of kicking against the pricks, and the latest installment in that maverick history is Adore, which is more a collection of lullabies or hymns than alternative rock of any particular description.

"That's very good, because that's what I was telling my friends," says a clearly pleased Corgan. "It's almost like a kind of prayer music or mantras or something. Some people have picked up on that -- not a lot of people -- but that's how I feel, and that's the way we're approaching it when we play it. It has a certain shimmering spirituality to it. It's about as close as I'll probably ever come to gospel music.

"We had this meeting where we decided, 'Is Mellon Collie going to be the last kind of rock Pumpkins album, or are we just going to leave it behind right here?'" he continues. "We all felt very strongly that we needed to make, in essence, our quintessential Pumpkins album, so that when we're old and grey it's all there on tape." Hence the vastly different feel of Adore. "When we made that decision, we knew that the album subsequently was going to be a huge departure," adds Corgan. "Then, when we came off tour from Mellon Collie -- it was 16 months or whatever -- the first thing we did was, we went into the studio. I'd written all these new songs, which were acoustically- based kind of piano songs, so we just started there. It seemed evident that that was the direction we were going in. Then, once we went in and started tinkering," he laughs heartily, "the folk thing went right out the window."

Allstarmag's Pumpkins Interview, Part 2

The following is part 2 of a 3-part interview from allstarmag.com:
Billy Corgan Discusses Adore Lineup Changes

The Smashing Pumpkins have deserved a few laughs over the last year or two, after the heartbreaking departure of friend and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin and, bleaker still, the overdose death of touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin.

Chamberlin's departure could have meant Billy Corgan had to rethink the band's chemistry and internal balance. After all, the creative interaction within the outfit and between the individual Pumpkins was firmly rooted in the fact they were four very separate individuals.

"The way it's worked out is it's just like he's not there," reflects Corgan. "It hasn't really shifted the politics or the energy at all. It's like we're missing something, and for a while I think the missing feeling fucked with our heads. It's like waiting around for someone to show up. Then after a while -- I think about halfway through the album -- we just said it's not going to happen. There is going to be no glorious return and we're not going to find anybody, so this is what we have."

But once the band focused on recording, says Corgan, the mood improved. "It seemed like the moment we hooked up the drum machine everything got better," he continues. "We just accepted that that's the situation, and we literally went back to where we started, which was just the three of us and a drum machine. It was kind of poignant in a way, because when you find you've gone full circle and you accept it, you're no longer resisting the idea of it or the feeling of it. And everything's been fine since."

For some, the entire episode may have marred the band's somewhat pristine -- even virginal -- image. Perhaps that's why there's something warm and comforting about Adore, although Corgan isn't sure whether the album is about the sound of love or the seeking of it.

"That's a good question," he laughs. "To me, it's the first record we've made that's, in a weird way, unsentimental. It has a kind of picture feeling, like you're peering into the past, you're peering into the future, but for the first time it's with a plain sight. I don't feel like it's sentimentalized, and it's not as idealized. There's factures in the music, there's an ugliness to it as much as there is a beauty. It's strange. It just worked out that way."

Strong Showing for "Ava Adore" Single

This week's Billboard Hot 100 Singles list includes the American debut of the "Ava Adore" single at #42. Billboard is calling the new Pumpkins single the "Hot Shot Debut," which I guess is a cheesy way of calling it the strongest single debut this week.

Billboard chart information from www.billboard.com, and thanks to Starla2000 for bringing this to our attention.

Not Dead

On Netphoria's own Messageboard, there is a message from "pugs" warning about a prankster on the www.smashingpumpkins.org messageboard claiming that Billy Corgan was killed from a car crash in Australia. To the best of our knowledge, the Great Pumpkin is still tickin', so if you see such a claim on Netphoria's messageboard, don't freak, OK?

In other "he's not dead" news, the sub-webmaster of this site is also among the living, for better or for worse. Webmaster Andrew Pakula had pondered Michael Day's (that's me) fate in a news update, rightly so, since he hadn't heard from me in a while. To make a long story short, I was having massive computer problems, but I'm back and updating. I'm sure you really care. On with the news...

Strong Showing for "Ava Adore" Single

This week's Billboard 200 includes The Smashing Pumpkins' new album Adore, dropping down two spots from last week.
Here's this week's Billboard Top Ten:
1 - Soundtrack - City of Angels (up 1 spot from last week)
2 - Brandy - Never S-A-Y Never (up 1 spot)
3 - Master P - MP Da Last Don (down 2 spots)
4 - Soundtrack - Hope Floats (up 1 spot)
5 - Soundtrack - Godzilla -- The Album (down 1 spot)
6 - Garth Brooks - The Limited Series (no change)
7 - Backstreet Boys - Backstreet Boys (no change)
8 - Shania Twain - Come On Over (up 1 spot)
9 - Will Smith - Big Willie Style (up 3 spots)
10 - The Smashing Pumpkins - Adore (down 2 spots)

John Fogerty Delivers a Warning to Smashing Pumpkins

Taken from wallofsound.com:
John Fogerty Delivers a Warning to Smashing Pumpkins

John Fogerty has a message for the Smashing Pumpkins: You'd better take care of him. By "him," Fogerty is referring to drummer Kenny Aronoff, who was part of Fogerty's band before he decided to jump ship and head off to join the Chicago group's tour in support of its latest album, Adore. "He really did not give me the opportunity to talk him out of it," Fogerty says of Aronoff's decision to tour with the Pumpkins. "The first I knew of it, he had already made up his mind. I was understandably shocked more than anything—shocked and disappointed. But not angry. Kenny is, number one, a dear friend and a great musician." But that hasn't stopped Fogerty from taking a few friendly shots at Aronoff during his own concerts: "He wanted to go play with another bald guy," Fogerty quipped during a recent Detroit show, referring to Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, who, like Aronoff, sports a bald pate, though his is the result of a clean, close shave, while Aronoff's hairless condition is the result of a more natural process.

Fogerty says he's also a bit concerned about Aronoff's welfare in a band that lost its last drummer to substance abuse. "They really better take care of him," Fogerty says. "I hope they live up to whatever promises they dangled in front of him, whatever they've represented as a deal. I think I felt a lot of misgivings that that [group] isn't the most stable situation in the world. I just think Kenny had a longing to be in an alternative kind of stance. I think we would have found ourselves there if he'd only waited a little longer. But life being the way it is, I'm quite certain I'll be playing again with Kenny many times in the future. And I'll look forward to them.'' —Gary Graff

Puff Dady Re-Mix

I don't know if this is true or if this is just a rumor but I've been hearing that Puff Dady may be doing a re-mix of a Smashing Pumpkins song. Which song I don't know but Puff Dady has said before in the past that he likes the Pumpkins music.

Windows 98

Just a quick note in case you don't already know, Windows 98 has been released. In my honest opinion, don't waste your money, you're only making a rich man richer.

Hole's Next LP 'A Smash' Says Pumpkins Leader

Taken from sonicnet.com:
Hole's Next LP 'A Smash' Says Pumpkins Leader

Says album of 'dark L.A.' tunes, some of which he helped write, is not heavy but rocks.

Staff Writer Chris Nelson reports:

It's hard to imagine rock visionary Billy Corgan as proud of anything as he is of his beloved Smashing Pumpkins.

But then again, that's because the world has yet to hear Celebrity Skin, the forthcoming and oft-delayed Hole record for which the Pumpkins leader co-wrote and arranged a handful of songs.

"I thought the album was a smash and I still think that," the 31-year-old Corgan said in an interview with SonicNet Music News in late April. "It's gonna be a fantastic album."

The Pumpkins' guitarist, singer and songwriter, who said his contributions to the upcoming Hole record helped bring out the music's strength, characterized the sound of Celebrity Skin (Sept. 8) as a departure for the band. "It's dark L.A.," he said during an interview at his band's rehearsal space in Chicago. "That's what [Hole leader Courtney Love] said she wanted and that's what I helped give her. It probably rocks as much as [the Smashing Pumpkins' recently released] Adore does. It rocks, but it's definitely not heavy."

Despite his glowing admiration for the disc, however, Corgan's precise role in the album recently raised the ire of the irascible Love. After learning that Corgan offhandedly referred to himself as the "Svengali" behind the disc in the British magazine Select, Love fired off a statement this week to USA Today strictly delineating Corgan's role as the co-writer of five songs on the album.

"I feel it's silly and somewhat sexist to credit Billy Corgan with things Billy Corgan did not do based on the assumption that accomplished male musicians are somehow superior to accomplished female musicians," wrote Love, Hole's founder, singer and guitarist.

Far from seeming peacockish, however, Corgan appeared genuinely proud to have lent a hand on an album that he said he believes is a bona fide hit. "Originally, I was helping shape the album, shape the songs they had," Corgan said, his face close to beaming when the subject of Hole was raised. "Then I ended up writing some songs and I felt really, really strongly about the material that they'd come up with and I'd come up with."

As it turns out, Love actually had not read the full Select story when she issued her missive, said Jim Merlis, a spokesman for Geffen Records, for which Hole record. "Now that she's seen it, she realizes that's just the way Billy is," Merlis said, referring to Corgan's penchant for impassioned, if sometimes exaggerated, speech, often delivered with his tongue firmly planted in his cheek.

"She's not mad at him anymore," Merlis said.

While Merlis said he's yet to see a complete track and credit listing for the album, Love has said that Corgan co-wrote five of Celebrity Skin's final dozen cuts with her and Hole guitarist Eric Erlandson. More material may surface as B-sides, however, as Corgan said he had a hand in penning seven of 15 songs that the group hashed out altogether. He worked on 13 of those as an arranger.

Corgan himself appears honored to have played his role, even if it wasn't quite Svengalian. "I'm very proud of the work that I did with Courtney and Eric on the Hole record, because I feel I really helped bring out the strength of their music and I think it'll really show," he said.

The recent songwriting flare-up came after years of unproven rumors that Love's husband, the late Nirvana leader Kurt Cobain, had taken a substantial role in crafting the songs for Hole's 1994 breakthrough album, Live Through This, which included the hit single "Doll Parts" (RealAudio excerpt). Love consistently has denied such allegations. The tracks for that smash album and Hole's less popular debut, Pretty on the Inside (1991), are credited to the group.

In her statement to USA Today, Love said publishing rights to the new, co-written songs are split, but "Obviously, 100 percent of the lyrics are mine, as always."

"I thought Hole's first record was brilliant in its brutality," said Corgan, whose Pumpkins currently are touring in support of their latest album, Adore. "And I thought that Live Through This has some amazing songs, but some of the grungy kind-of stuff was past its due date. But it was almost reactionary, like, 'We have to do grunge.'

"This album has nothing reactionary on it ... It's a musical album that defines itself," Corgan said. "The times don't define the album -- the album defines the times."

Rapper Master P retained the top slot on The Billboard 200 this week with "MP Da Last Don," his latest No Limit set, moving 218,000 units, according to SoundScan. Epic's "Godzilla -- The Album" clocked in at No. 4 (123,000 units), while Capitol's country-tinged "Hope Floats" soundtrack, featuring Garth Brooks and others, held onto the No. 5 spot (106,000).

Charity Concerts Sell Out in Minutes

Most of the tickets for the charity concerts went on sale today and in many places it sold out in minutes. When I went to get some tickets i was about the 15th person in line after the stupid random risk band draw, anyways when it was my turn to go in and order the tickets after waiting in line for over an hour I was told their was only single tickets left so I said to get 3 if possible but he was only able to get 1 ticket and he told me after checking the database that the ticket I got was the last ticket that TicketMaster had for show, I couldn't believe it! By fluke the ticket was a good one too! I got floor seats 5 rows back and almost in the middle. This show sold out in 6 minutes here in Toronto. After it sold out my brother was still able to get a ticket by calling the Massey Hall(the venue) and got a ticket, they had a few extra there but by the time you read this it's probably too late if you don't have tickets, you'll have to buy off scalpers.

Billboard Charts Not So Smashing

Taken from allstarmag.com:
Smashing Pumpkins Debut At No. 2; Master P Moves To No. 1

The almighty Master P rises from the middle of The Billboard 200 next week to No. 1, depriving the Smashing Pumpkins' latest album of the top spot.

Master P's Da Last Don moves to No. 1 from No. 112, where it debuted last week prematurely due to a street date violation. Da Last Don was slated to come out -- and for the most part did -- last Tuesday (June 2); however, some stores got a hold of the disc early and sold it, selling enough for its bow at No. 112. According to Billboard magazine's Geoff Mayfield, it was the largest street date violation in the history of SoundScan.

Meanwhile, the Smashing Pumpkins' Adore nabbed the No. 2 position, selling 173,996, according to SoundScan, in its first week out. Last week's No. 1, the City of Angels soundtrack, falls down to No. 3. Other artists debuting on next week's chart include: Onxy's Shut 'Em Down at No. 10; Gloria Estefan's Gloria! at No. 23; the X-Files soundtrack at No. 31; Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz's Make It Reign at No. 38; Rod Stewart's When We Were the New Boys at No. 44; the Jimi Hendrix Experience's BBC Sessions at No. 50; and Tricky's Angels with Dirty Faces at No. 84.

Change Their Name to Smashing Tortoises?

Taken from LA Times:
Change Their Name to Smashing Tortoises?

Recording industry observers expecting a tight rap-versus-rock showdown may be disappointed Wednesday when SoundScan reports first-week sales totals for new albums by New Orleans rapper Master P and the Chicago-based alt-rock band the Smashing Pumpkins. The initial-week figure for Master P's "MP Da Last Don" is expected to be as much as three times higher than the number attained by the Pumpkins' "Adore," perhaps exceeding 500,000 copies. By the time the albums run their course, however, the Pumpkins could end up smashing Master P. "It appears that Master P will be th ebig winner this week, and I underline THIS week," says Gary Arnold, vice president of marketing for the Best Buy retail chain. "As happens frequently with rap records, you have this huge groundswell of fans who show up in Week 1 to buy the album. It's part of being in fashion, but that usually lasts only a few weeks.". Acts such as the Pumpkins, on the other hand, are built to last, according to Arnold. "They're about to start a tour and a long-term relationship with the consumer in connection with this album," the executive says. "Don't discount them from being the overall winner in this sales battle when all is said and done. It's kind of like a tortoise-and-hare thing."

Lisa Germano Fired

The Smashing Pumpkins played in Genova Italy without Lisa Germano. According to the bassist D'Arcy Wreztky she was fired after the first concert in Hamburg because "she wasn't going along with the group". Kenny Aronoff played regularly with the group and according to the journalist of "La Repubblica", who reviewed the concert, "his round and precise drumming weren't going along as well with the rough voice of Billy Corgan".

New Charity Tour Dates

Taken from Sonicnet.com:

Smashing Pumpkins Announce Charity Tour

All ticket sales revenue from group's 13-city summer tour to go to local youth charities.

Music News Editor-in-Chief Michael Goldberg reports:

The Smashing Pumpkins today announced a 14-show, 13-city charity tour, billed as "An Evening with the Smashing Pumpkins." The tour will begin in San Francisco on June 30 and end in Miami on August 8.

The group will donate all ticket sales revenue from the 14 shows to local youth charities; one non-profit organization in each city where the Pumpkins perform will be the beneficiary of the ticket sales revenue in that city, according to the group's management.

"With this tour and in choosing these specific charities we believe it is very important not just to lend our name but also give our money," Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan said in a prepared statement.

"Each organization has such a positive impact in the community," Corgan continued, "we wanted to shine the spotlight on their work."

The much anticipated summer tour by one of the most popular rock bands in the world will begin in San Francisco on June 30 at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium; the money from that show will go to the East Bay Agency for Children.

The group, whose latest album, Adore, was released on Tuesday, will also hit Detroit, Dallas, Houston, Toronto, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Boston, New York City, Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte and Miami, where the final show will take place.

The Pumpkins have been touring Europe since mid-May, performing 90 minute sets that have drawn mostly from their new album, but have also included "1979" off their smash 1995 album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, and a cover of Joy Division's "Transmission."

As has been the case in Europe, for the North American shows the trio -- guitarist James Iha, bassist D'Arcy Wretzky and Corgan -- will be joined by drummer Kenny Aronoff, percussionists Stephen Hodges and Dan Morris, and keyboardist Mike Garson.

The Pumpkins, traveling with a 19-or-so member crew, will bear all expenses incurred during the tour. Those expenses are expected to be "much more than" several hundred thousand dollars, according to the group's publicist, Gayle Fine. "There's transportation, hotels, sound, lights..."

The shows will be billed as "An Evening with the Smashing Pumpkins," and there will be no opening acts. In Nashville on August 5, the group will do a "special acoustic show" at the Grand Ole Opry, said Fine. "The plan was never to do a long tour," said Fine. "This is a way to get to major areas of the country and to pay back their fans.

"The band wants to be involved in positive things," Fine added, explaining the decision to do a charity tour. "Each of those [charities] does very positive work in their communities. They're all great, local grassroots organizations. The Pumpkins have been together for ten years. This is a way to give back to the kids and communities that have been supportive during the past ten years."

The Pumpkins spent several months researching charities in the cities where they will perform, ultimately selecting non-profit organizations that "work with kids and are family oriented," Fine said. "Taken as a whole [the charities] cover pretty much all walks of life."

Fine added that the goal in each city is to "give at least six figures [over $100,000] to the local charity." If they accomplish that goal, more than $1.4 million will reach the 13 youth-oriented charities. In addition to the charity tour, the group will perform at four H.O.R.D.E. dates, Milwaukee's Summerfest, Minneapolis' free Hennepin Avenue Block Party, and headline a benefit show at Chicago's Soldier Field (with net proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northern Illinois.

Chicago Concert: Want tickets?

Taken from Sonicnet.com:

Smashing Pumpkins Set Homecoming Benefit Show

Smashing Pumpkins will have a homecoming party in Soldier Field after all. The band is playing a show there on July 7 with Cheap Trick opening to benefit the Chicago Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The show kicks off at 7:30 p.m. with all tickets priced at $30. Fans will be able to get their hands on tickets Saturday June 13 at noon Central time with an right ticket per-person limit. Credit card carrying fans can order tickets over the phone at (312) 559-1212. The Pumpkins had previously been turned down in their efforts to stage a free concert at the site.

"We're thrilled that this situation worked out," Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan said of the show. "And although we can't play a free concert like we had hoped, we're excited to be able to play a charity show and support a local Chicago charity like the Make-A-Wish Foundation."

Chicago Concert: Not free, but proceeds will go to charity

Pumpkins to Play Huge Hometown Charity Show

Concert will be band's only Chicago appearance during upcoming tour.

Senior Writer Gil Kaufman reports:

The Smashing Pumpkins will live their dream of giving something back to their hometown fans when they play a charity show at Chicago's Soldier Field on July 7. The band will donate 100 percent of net proceeds from the show at the 55,000-capacity home of football's Chicago Bears to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northern Illinois, according to the group's managers.

"We're thrilled that this situation has worked out," said Pumpkins' leader Billy Corgan in a prepared statement. " Although we can't play a free concert like we had hoped, we're excited to be able to play a charity show and support a local Chicago charity."

The show, which will be opened by the group's heroes and Illinois neighbors Cheap Trick, will be the band's only appearance in Chicago during their brief upcoming U.S. tour, the dates and venues of which have not yet been released.

The Pumpkins had originally hoped to celebrate their 10th anniversary as a band with a massive, free party for their hometown Chicago fans at the Petrillo Band Shell in Grant Park near the city's waterfront. City officials, however, denied the band's offer last month, citing fears of an overflow crowd estimated at between 100,000-600,000 mobbing the 60,000-capacity space.

At the time, the band's co-manager, Cliff Burnstein, said of the rebuff, "This was a way to give back. In their hometown. It sucks big time."

Pumpkins publicist Gayle Fine added that the group's members handpicked the charity, which works to fulfill the wishes of children between the ages of 2 and 18 suffering from life-threatening illnesses.

Corgan had told the Chicago Tribune last month that the denial from the city to do the free concert was "one of the biggest heartbreaks I've ever had in my life."

Tickets, priced at $30, will go on sale June 13. There is an eight-ticket limit per person.

A representative for the Make-A-Wish Foundation said the charity group is overjoyed at the generous offer from the band. "We are totally excited and elated to be in this partnership with them," said Linda Parck, director of corporate and community relations for the foundation. "I couldn't believe it when I heard, I had to sit down." Parck said she was unclear as to why the group had chosen the Make-A-Wish organization but that she was aware of them working with the charity in the past.

"I think they did some research and came up with us, probably because we have such a heavy presence in the Chicagoland area," Parck said. "We had a child years ago who wanted to meet a band and had the Pumpkins as their backup and when they met the Pumpkins said, 'those other guys are so much nicer than the band I wanted to meet,' " in reference to the Chicago trio, who just released their new album, entitled Adore.

The massive charity show at the 55,000-plus capacity football stadium is the first of its kind at the venue, according to Joanne Kelleher, an administrative assistant at Soldier Field.

The Pumpkins are scheduled to play to more than 100,000 fans at the free Hennepin Avenue Block Party on July 17 in Minneapolis. In early May, Corgan had called that event's sponsor, Rock 100.3-FM, and complained that several cities had denied the band's requests to stage free shows. The group will wrap a one-month European promotional tour on June 9, during which it played a number of unusual venues, including the Guggenheim Museum in Bilboa, Spain, and the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Smashing Pumpkins an International Sensation

The Smashing Pumpkins are becomming an international sensation. With their release of the album Adore in the international market they have seen first week numbers that are very impressive.

The album has become the groups highest charting album of their career. The strong international debut of Adore comes as the band prepares to embark on a very special 14-show North American tour where 100% of the ticket sales goes to local youth-charities.

Another Positive Adore Review!

Taken from the The Times (London) Online:

The Big Album - Fully Ripened

SMASHING PUMPKINS (8/10)
Adore
(Hut Recordings)

May 1991 saw the release of two albums central to the grunge explosion in America and later in Britain. The first, of course, was Nirvana's staggering Nevermind; the second, the Smashing Pumpkins' Gish which, although fairly well-received, bowed a little under the weight of the band's obvious affection for early Seventies rock, and Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath in particular. By the time of the Pumpkins' second album, Siamese Dream, in 1993, Nirvana were huge and grunge was all conquering. The sheer scale and grandeur of Siamese Dream had critics salivating. Some suggested that Nirvana's imminent follow-up, In Utero, could not possibly match it. Kurt Cobain's band did not even try, and their stripped-down, terrifying third studio album stole the limelight once more.

A year after Cobain's death, the Pumpkins and their leader, Billy Corgan - dysfunctional by his own admission - took their pomp grunge even further with the sprawling and flawed Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. The self-loathing and ludicrously over-blown posturing were beginning to look ridiculous, especially when set against Nirvana's intimate intensity. Even Corgan appeared weary, proclaiming, "It's the end of this band." For all the wrong reasons, 1996 was a turning point in the group's development. The band's tour keyboard player, Jonathan Melvoin, died of a heroin overdose after a night of narcotic indulgence with the band's drummer Jimmy Chamberlin (who departed soon after). Worse was to follow as Corgan's mother Martha, who had often been excoriated in Corgan's songs for abandoning him as a child, was diagnosed as having terminal cancer and died five months later, with Corgan at her side.

Two years on from this worst of times, and remarkably, the Smashing Pumpkins have produced their best album to date, an album that, for a number of reasons, is shocking. It is for the most part a very un-rock album. The trademark thunderhead guitars have been abandoned and replaced by nimble melodicism, imaginative string arrangements and liberal splashes of pop's primary colours. It is a record very much overshadowed by the death of Corgan's mother. Once Upon a Time, a lovely, pastoral acoustic lament, features the heartbreaking line, "Mother, I hope you know/ that I miss you so." But it is on the epic tribute to his mother, For Martha, that Corgan's grief is fashioned into something truly spectacular. It is simply beautiful; a piano motif guides an elegantly structured verse into the tranquility of the chorus: "If you have to go don't say goodbye/if you have to go I will get by/Someday I will follow you/and see you on the other side." The song then explodes into a guitar barrage reminiscent of the bombast on their earlier albums, before subsiding again. And it all works perfectly.

The new album also sees Corgan embracing the light and shade of pop. The wonderful Appels and Oranjes is stripped down New Order, possessed of a sinewy, direct tune and distinguished by a resignedly optimistic chorus, "What if the sun refuses to shine/What if the clouds refuse to rain/What if the clocks hesitate/What will you do?" Furthermore, The Tale of Dusty and Pistol Pete is a fluid, gorgeous acoustic lilt which passes itself off as a Pumpkins' summer anthem until you clock the line, "As he holds her down in the cold lonely wind", and you realise that Corgan now understands that uncomfortable subject matter need not be clothed in music of sackcloth.

Confounding all expectations, the Smashing Pumpkins are now out on their own, making the kind of heartfelt and ambitious music of which Kurt Cobain would have been proud.
