Smashing Pumpkins Prep New Album, 20th Anniversary Tour

Reunited band breaks out classic tunes for tour; concept disc to follow

Billy Corgan - Rolling StoneBilly Corgan is the first to admit that the Smashing Pumpkins’ return hasn’t always gone the way he’d hoped. In 2006, he and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin re-formed the band after a six-year layoff, recorded a new album, Zeitgeist, and hit the road. The Pumpkins’ upcoming DVD, If All Goes Wrong (out November 11th), chronicles what followed: fans puzzled by the absence of founding members James Iha and D’arcy Wretzky, and tense moments onstage and off.

“You’re standing onstage and hearing people going, ‘I don’t know how I feel about this,’” recalls Corgan. “We found that America had turned every older band into the ‘reunion band.’ It was ‘I just want to hear those eight songs and drink my beer.’ You think, ‘I’m 41 years old, and I’ve earned some level of trust.’ And you find out you’re just like everybody else. You’re no better than Bon Jovi.”

Then came mixed reviews and modest sales for Zeitgeist. (”A gold record in this economy is quite an accomplishment,” Corgan counters.) Finally, he and the band’s label, Warner Bros., parted ways after what Corgan calls “zero support” from the company.

Still, Corgan is upbeat about the state of the Pumpkins. “There’s something about being in the band that brings things out in me motivationally,” he says. “I don’t know if it brings the best out of me musically, but it brings the best out in me energetically.” He’s particularly fired up about the Pumpkins’ 20th-anniversary tour, which kicks off in Cleveland on November 1st. As with last year’s shows, Corgan and Chamberlin will be joined by guitarist Jeff Schroeder, bassist Ginger Reyes and keyboardist Lisa Harriton, plus to-be-determined additional musicians.

The Smashing Pumpkins to Release Double DVD Set - ‘If All Goes Wrong’

Smashing Pumpkins - If All Goes WrongThe Smashing Pumpkins to Release Double DVD Set - ‘If All Goes Wrong’

Features Full Concert in High Definition and Revealing Documentary

Coming Home Media will release If All Goes Wrong, a double DVD commemorative package celebrating the recent reunion and extraordinary 20-year career of The Smashing Pumpkins, one of rock’s defining and most acclaimed bands, on Nov. 11th.

Directed and produced by Jack Gulick (Bruce Springsteen, Metallica, Steve Miller Band, Godsmack) and Daniel E Catullo III (Steve Miller Band, Godsmack, Rush, Dave Matthews Band), the two DVD set contains the 105-minute documentary, also titled If All Goes Wrong, plus The Fillmore Residency, a full concert filmed in late July and early August of 2007 over five of the 11 sold-out nights at the famed Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco, CA.

The concert disc was captured in 5.1 Surround Sound and state-of-the-art high definition from 12 cameras and features seven all new tracks not available anywhere else, along with new versions of fan favorites and a selection of Pumpkins rarities.

From the opening note to the final chord, the documentary If All Goes Wrong showcases a band returning with an “enveloping epic force” (Los Angeles Times) as it traces The Smashing Pumpkins during their 19-show residency, which began with eight shows at Asheville, NC’s Orange Peel in late June and continued through 11 sold-out nights at San Francisco’s famed Fillmore Auditorium. Interviews with band members, fans, journalists and fellow musicians reveal the fears, excitement, determination, exhaustion and tension inherent in main singer-songwriter and lead guitarist Billy Corgan and his newly revitalized musical unit.

“We went into the residencies hopeful to play some new music, with the idea I would write during the day and we could maybe even play new songs that same night,” Corgan comments. “What I didn’t anticipate is how much the process would inspire me, positively and negatively, to report what I was seeing and feeling from the shows. The documentary shows that process in an interesting way that reveals the link between the band and our audience.”

The documentary also includes Voices Of The Ghost Children, a featurette about the band’s fans, and an interview with The Who’s legendary guitarist and songwriter Pete Townshend as bonus material.

Fillmore ResidencyThe concert portion of the If All Goes Wrong, entitled The Fillmore Residency, runs 115 minutes and includes seven of the almost 20 all-new compositions the band composed and performed exclusively during the residencies that are available exclusively on this release. With 15 songs in all, the concert - captured in 5.1 Surround Sound and state-of-the-art high definition from 12 cameras - showcases the band as they explore the freedom afforded to them in a live setting, including the 30+ minute opus “Gossamer”. Along with the new tracks, the concert also includes alternate versions of fan favorites and a selection of Pumpkins rarities. The Fillmore Residency also includes five songs recorded live from the floor of The Fillmore that gives fans an intimate glimpse of the band as a performing entity.

Billy Corgan talks to L.A. Time’s about watchmen trailer. Also talks about G.L.O.W.

Ξ July 29th, 2008 by MonteLDS | → 0 Comments | ∇ Billy Corgan, Interviews, Music News, Smashing Pumpkins, Video |

Are you surprised at the reaction online from some young “Watchmen” fans who have never heard “The Beginning Is the End Is the Beginning,” let alone the Smashing Pumpkins?Honestly, I don’t really keep up on what the world is doing or saying anymore. The word on the street seems to be, from what my friends tell me, that the use of the song in the trailer is intriguing to them and has created some excitement around it.

What has been Smashing Pumpkins fan reaction toward the use of the song in the trailer?

My fans seem to be confused when the outside world appreciates our work, so I can only imagine this terrifies them.

What are your personal thoughts on “Watchmen?”

Before this I’d never heard of the “Watchmen” series, but from what I’ve seen it looks very interesting.

Who approached you to use the song and do you think it’s a good fit?
I just got a call one day asking if I was cool with it, and I was surprised because it’s a version of that song that never seemed to get any notice. Months before the trailer was released I kept hearing from friends in the movie business that they loved how the song worked with the images from the movie. I love the way it’s used in the trailer. I’ve asked the movie people if it’s possible we could release it as a music video. Still waiting on that one. Certainly the massive jump in on-line sales seems to indicate it might be worth it for us and for the movie.

Finally, when can we expect to hear “G.L.O.W.” or any other new SP material?

Just finished recording “G.L.O.W.” in Memphis at the famed Ardent Studios and hope to release it in early September. We feel we have finally turned the corner with these last 2 releases (“American Gothic” and “G.L.O.W.” to come) where it’s starting to feel like our music again, and not theirs, whoever “they” might be. Have plans to start recording a new multi-year, multi-release concept album by the end of this year. It will be very trippy and hopefully unique, and we’ll probably keep putting out singles here.

Interview with Jeff Schroeder

Ξ July 29th, 2008 by MonteLDS | → 0 Comments | ∇ Interviews, Smashing Pumpkins |

Smashing Pumpkins touring guitarist, Jeff Schroeder took time out to talk with the pumpkins media militia’s Hack as well as some other Smashing Pumpkin fans.

Wayne Arnold asks:
“I’d like to know what songs are your favorite to play with the band and which songs you hope to play that SP hasn’t pulled out yet.”

I really enjoy playing songs off of Adore and Machina, which is interesting because they were the two albums that took the longest to grow on me. I’ve always had a soft spot for Pennies off the Zero single, so that would be my choice for a song we haven’t played yet.
